WHAT IS BSR?
BSR is a service provided to breeders in order for them to select parasite resistant animals to improve the genetic value of their flock. BSR is a certified WormFEC provider enabling breeding values to be entered onto SIL.
WHY BREED FOR RESISTANCE?
Commercial farmers are now, and will continue to, seek the opportunity to utilise a genetic option to fight worms as concerns about drench resistance increases.
It is estimated that approx 10% of a flock can contribute 50% of the pasture contamination. By identifying the 10% who are polluting your pastures you can cut contamination by half. By reducing contamination levels on pasture, production losses can be minimised and as a result productivity increased.
Genetically superior animals will require less drenching and will minimise the possible production consequences of subsequent drench failure, which will contribute to a lower cost of production.
Global market demand is moving towards food products that are chemical free or at least produced within chemically responsible systems.
WHAT DO YOU GET?
- Breeders are provided with all the individual FEC results from which they can make selection decisions. This information is provided in both hard copy and on disc.
- WormFEC customers will have their data sent to their nominated bureau who will determine the breeding values for the flock.
Industry Survey of Breeding for Resistance
The survey was performed to provide a greater understanding and explanation for the low industry uptake of breeding as a tool to combat the cost of parasitism. Breeders Industry Survey Results Summary
